With a late season permit, three artists and I headed into the Enchantments for 5 days and 4 nights, with a shared goal of capturing the landscapes through painting. After gaining Aasgard Pass, we camped at the first reasonably sheltered spot we could find. We woke up in the morning, and walked back to the top of the pass to paint as we looked down at Colchuck Lake. It was cold, windy, and sprinkling at the time. This small piece was a great exercise in letting go of control. I had no choice but to let the raindrops create texture in the sky I had just painted, and to welcome the spots of acrylic on the rocks that peeled up after I shut my soggy sketchbook. Painting outside can certainly have it’s challenges.. but it’s a beautiful thing when the landscape that you’re painting takes over and directly impacts what you create.
